The Owner
History and Founding Story: Tracing its Roots in Portsmouth. The Green Grocer first opened its doors in 2007 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The establishment is the vision of John Wood and former owner Aly Marks-Wood.
John has been a resident of Portsmouth for nearly three decades. The connection to the community is profound, and he has a passion for family, natural and organic foods, and the well-being of neighbors. The impetus for creating The Green Grocer stems from a deeply personal experience of co-founder John Wood. Following his service in Desert Storm in 1991, he began experiencing symptoms that were later identified as Gulf War Syndrome. A physician suggested that his condition might be a form of “environmental illness” and recommended a lifestyle change focused on eliminating environmental toxins and incorporating a regimen of vitamins and minerals. Aly, who already embraced a simpler and more natural way of living, played a crucial role in helping John on this path. This journey towards prioritizing health through natural and organic choices ultimately inspired the establishment of a business that would share these benefits with the community. This origin story imbues the store with a sense of genuine care and a mission rooted in personal conviction.
From its inception, The Green Grocer has aimed to be more than just a grocery store; it has striven to be a resource for health and wellness within Portsmouth. Nearly twenty years after its opening, The Green Grocer continues to operate in its original 3800-square-foot location. The fact that the business has not only survived but is thriving after nearly two decades suggests that its commitment to its mission and its understanding of the local market have resonated strongly with its customers.
A significant event in the store’s history that underscored its dedication to its principles occurred in 2012. Upon discovering that Kashi products contained GMO soy, The Green Grocer made the decision to remove them from their shelves. A photograph of the store’s notice explaining this decision to customers went viral online, sparking a widespread conversation about GMOs and generating a considerable backlash against Kashi. John Wood reflected on this moment, stating, “Once that photo went viral, we crossed a threshold and couldn’t turn back,” emphasizing the store’s unwavering commitment to non-GMO standards. This incident not only brought national attention to The Green Grocer but also solidified its ireputation as a proactive and principled voice in the movement for healthier and more transparent food systems.
